What Causes Knock in Vehicle?

Although internal combustion engines operate according to two different fuel types, diesel and gasoline, their working principles are basically the same. In the combustion chamber, where chemical energy is converted into motion energy, the fuel is burned as a result of certain stages and the resulting energy moves the vehicle.

The combustion process in gasoline engines consists of stages in the form of suction, compression, combustion and exhaust. The compressed air, fuel mixture, and spark plugs are ignited by the cylinder and the resulting pressure force turns the crank arm. There may be more than one reason for knocking situations in vehicles. In particular, the octane ratio in gasoline can cause the fuel to self-ignite with the heat generated when it is compressed. In this way, before the cylinder can reach its upper position, it wants to create a rotating effect on the crank arm again. This causes knocking. Another reason is the delays that may occur in spark plug ignition times. Due to a malfunction in the vehicle's brain, the spark plugs cannot fire at the desired time and knocking occurs. Uncontrolled valve timing, valves are parts that work with cam and spring mechanism and play an important role in adjusting the combustion timing. A malfunction in the springs or the camping mechanism causes knocking. The air formed by the sudden pressure differences and temperature rise in the combustion chamber hits the cylinder, engine block and valve caps. As a result of this impact, a tinkling sound is produced in gasoline engines. In diesel engines, on the other hand, a squeaky-like noise will occur. A knocking engine will cause excessive damage to the valve caps and engine cylinder seat as it continues to run, preventing the cylinder from starting in the engine seat. In the following periods, excessive heat occurs due to friction and the engine may be welded with the cylinders and become inoperable. Knocking operation, which is a very harmful situation, can cause very costly damage if not intervened immediately.
